2022 Mahindra Scorpio-N bookings sold in grey market

Mahindra has already created a lot of hype with the all-new Scorpio-N, which is touching new heights of popularity with each passing day. Along with this popularity comes a few impressions which are not going well with the prospective customers, thus creating an unpleasant experience for some. However, there’s a piece of recent news surrounding the Scorpio-N, which is both shocking and hilarious at the same time.

The first 25,000 bookings, for which the introductory prices were applicable, got confirmed within the first minute of the opening of bookings, which created a frenzied situation for the next set of the booking window. Due to instances of payment failure or website slowdown, many customers failed to secure a place in the first 25,000 bookings, and for that, they might have to pay the increased prices.

Citing this advantage of locking the introductory prices, a person from Ferozepur has declared that he is one of the first 25,000 customers of the Scorpio-N, and will get the delivery of the SUV by October. In a Facebook Group post, he announced that if someone is willing to take the delivery of the SUV in October, then he/she can contact him for the same. What’s shocking is that the person has already listed the Scorpio Z8 Diesel-automatic four-wheel-drive booked by him for sale at Rs 27 lakh.

The Scorpio-N diesel-automatic four-wheel-drive has an ex-showroom price of Rs 21.90 lakh, which roughly accounts for Rs 25 lakh on the road, including essentials like RTO and insurance. With an asking price of Rs 27 lakh, the customer is demanding a premium of almost Rs 2 lakh. This price is significantly high for a second-hand car, as the customer who has listed this ad will be the first owner of the SUV as per the norms.

The asking price is more than the ex-showroom price

The high asking price of the customer might seem to be too optimistic and opportunistic for many people. However, many people might want to get their hands on the Scorpio-N in October, which is generally the month of the festive season as per the Hindu calendar. It will not be surprising if the customer strikes a deal at his asking price.

In the past, Mahindra has faced situations in which a customer immediately sells his recently purchased SUV to a new buyer for a high premium. We have seen such instances in the last couple of years with the Thar and XUV700. However, it is for the first time that a vehicle has landed in the used car market before the first owner of that car has got its delivery!

Mahindra clocked 1 lakh bookings of the Scorpio-N on the very first day of commencement of bookings. It is a reason strong enough to estimate that the SUV will command an extremely long waiting period. Taking these bookings of the Scorpio-N into account, Mahindra currently has a huge backlog of 2.4 lakh bookings for various of its offerings, primarily Scorpio-N, XUV700 and Thar.

Out of 1.5 lakh bookings of XUV700 collected to date, Mahindra has delivered 50,000 units of the XUV700 to its customers. The XUV700 still commands a long waiting period, which goes up to even two years for selected variants. Even the Thar, which has completed two years in the Indian car market, still enjoys huge popularity and commands a waiting period of up to six months.
