Maruti Suzuki’s Grand Vitara SUV bags over 20,000 bookings ahead of September 2022 launch

Maruti Suzuki opened bookings for its latest offering, the all-new Grand Vitara compact SUV, on the 11th of July 2022. In about 3 weeks of pre-bookings opening, the Grand Vitara has managed to bag over 20,000 bookings. Nearly half of these bookings are for the Strong Hybrid variants, reflecting India’s enduring love for exceptional fuel efficiency. Maruti claims that the Grand Vitara Strong Hybrid will deliver a mileage of 28 Kmpl, which is better than diesel powered SUVs in the segment.

Maruti Grand Vitara bags 20,000 bookings: 1 out of 2 bookings for the Strong Hybrid variants

Notably, the Grand Vitara is Maruti Suzuki’s first Strong Hybrid car. Maruti has borrowed the Strong Hybrid technology from Toyota, who will also manufacture the Grand Vitara at its Bidadi factory alongside the Hyryder. The Hyryder is essentially Toyota’s version of the Grand Vitara. Save for the styling and a few other minor details, both SUVs are nearly identical.

The Grand Vitara’s Strong Hybrid powertrain consists of a 1.5 liter TNGA petrol engine running on the Atkinson’s cycle, paired with an electric motor running off a lithium ion battery. While the petrol engine makes 91 Bhp-122 Nm, the electric motor puts out 78 Bhp-144 Nm. Together, combined output stands at 114 Bhp.

The Strong Hybrid powertrain is paired with a CVT automatic gearbox as standard, and this set-up drives the front wheels of the car. Another highlight of the strong hybrid powertrain equipped Grand Vitara is that the SUV can be driven in all-electric mode (battery power) for about 25 kilometers. This will make it a great option for those using the SUV for short city commutes.

The Grand Vitara will also be sold with a mild hybrid powertrain, which is the 1.5 liter-4 cylinder K15C petrol paired with the SHVS (Suzuki Hybrid Vehicle System) mild hybrid unit. The mild hybrid powertrain puts out 102 Bhp-135 Nm, and is offered with two gearbox options: a 6 speed manual and a torque converter automatic. The manual gearbox equipped mild hybrid variant also gets an all wheel drive layout while a front wheel drive layout is standard. The all wheel drive layout is a best-in-class feature and this should makes the Grand Vitara quite a capable SUV for all kinds of road and weather conditions.

A large panoramic sunroof that’s the biggest-in-segment, head-up display, 6 airbags, multiple drive modes, disc brakes  on all four wheels, ventilated seats, hill hold control, digital instrument cluster, wireless charging, ambient lighting, SmartPlay touchscreen infotainment with Suzuki Connect and LED headlamps are key features on offer. You can check out the Grand Vitara at your nearest NEXA dealership, where it’s on display. The launch is slated for September 2022.
