Poundland Foundation celebrates £1m first year as fund-raising total hits £6m – Retail Times
The Poundland Foundation – the charity launched by the retailer last year – is celebrating its first birthday by announcing it has raised £1 million, taking Poundland’s fund-raising total in the past five years to more than £6million mark.
The £6 million represents the amount raised by Poundland colleagues, customers and suppliers since October 2017 – all now under the umbrella of the Poundland Foundation which has contributed more than £1 million since its launch in May 2021.
The foundation provides help in three key areas: its national charity partnership, community grants and inspiring the Poundland family of colleagues, customers and suppliers to support causes they care about in their communities.
To mark its first anniversary, the Poundland Foundation has unveiled a new tagline – “supporting families, changing lives”.
It has raised enough in its first year to help change the lives of more than 26,000 families across its three charity partners.
And it has today announced the extension of its national charity partnership with Make-A-Wish® UK, Tommy’s and Whizz-Kidz for another year to September 2023.
It also revealed that since last May it has given £250,000 in grants to more than 350 organisations under its Kits 4 Kids scheme, as part of its community grant programme.
Funds provided by the foundation have gone to sports groups including boys and girls football, cricket, cheerleading, boxing, rugby, table tennis, basketball, martial arts, gymnastics, hurling, rowing and sailing. Successful applications have come from across the UK, from Workington to Worcester and Belfast to Barnsley.
It has exciting plans to grow the grant programme and Kits 4 Kids will be back in the autumn, alongside trialling new grant programmes to support local communities. Interested organisations can register their interest by emailing email@example.com.
Barry Williams, managing director of Poundland, said: “The Poundland Foundation has had a fantastic first year and to raise more than £1 million in that time is an amazing effort by everyone involved.
“We look forward to supporting families and changing lives through our community grant programme, our national charity partnership and by inspiring the Poundland family. We’re sure Kits 4 Kids might already have helped to kick-off the careers of some of our sports stars of the future.”
Money for the foundation comes from in-store fundraising, carrier bag donations and the partnership with Pennies, the charity that collects micro-donations through chip and pin machines.
The money raised by the foundation:
- supports 350+ local kids’ sports clubs with new kit via the Kits 4 Kids grant programme
- helps Tommy’s to support 20,000 women and their families to receive care to help keep babies safe
- grants 800 wishes for critically ill children through Make-A-Wish
- provides 588 life-changing wheelchairs and mobility equipment for young disabled through Whizz-Kidz.
