Switch Mobility launches new electric bus in India


Switch Mobility Ltd., the electric bus and light commercial vehicle manufacturing subsidiary of Ashok Leyland, recently announced the debut of the ‘SWITCH EiV 12’, a state-of-the-art electric bus platform for the Indian market.

This next-generation E-Bus will meet India’s booming bus market, supported by over ten years of EV expertise said the company. Available in two variants: EiV 12 low floor and EiV 12 standard, these electric buses will provide the best-in-class in reliability, range, and comfort. The company also revealed that it has received over 600 orders for its newest electric buses.

According to the company, the EiV bus series has been specifically designed to fulfil the needs of customers in a variety of applications, including intra-city, inter-city, staff, school, and tarmac, while providing optimum passenger capacity and comfort. The buses also use a new generation of extremely efficient, modular batteries with superior lithium-ion NMC chemistry, which have been carefully developed for the Indian market and climate.

The modular batteries enhance the capacity per battery cell for the same weight, allowing for longer ranges – up to 300 kilometres per day on a single charge and up to 500 kilometres per day with twin gun fast charging. The electric drivetrains and batteries have been optimised to provide high efficiency and long battery life, resulting in a cheaper total cost of ownership. The upkeep of this ultra-modern E-Bus will be equally quick and effortless, said the company.

The existing line of Switch EV buses in India has a steady uptime of over 98 per cent over the previous few years. Over their period of operation in the country, the buses have driven over 8 million kilometres, saving over 5000 tonnes of CO2, the equivalent of planting over 30,000 trees. Currently, Switch India employs 450 people, with a headcount forecast to increase by more than 30% in the next five years.
