The launch of the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder is just around the corner, and the SUV has already created a lot of buzz for offering a segment-first self-charging full-hybrid powertrain option. While its distant cousin, the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara also gets the same powertrain, it is the Urban Cruiser Hyryder which will arrive earlier. There’s a lot of curiousness around this full-hybrid technology, and Toyota has simplified the working of the system through a video.

In a YouTube video uploaded by Toyota India, we can see the full operation of a self-charging hybrid electric vehicle, which has been shown with the help of a simulator. This vehicle has two power sources, a petrol-powered engine and a high voltage battery, that supplies power to a motor. There are two motor generators available in the vehicle, along with an inverter and converter assembly.

With this simulator, Toyota shows how the different functions of the self-charging hybrid electric vehicle work in life. The first feature of this powertrain is an idle start-stop system. Whenever the vehicle comes to a halt, the engine and the motor also stop working, thus preventing the wastage of fuel and electric power and contributing to the overall fuel efficiency of the vehicle.

The next feature of this powertrain is the Electric Vehicle (EV) mode. If the vehicle is driven at a slow speed, the power from the high voltage battery is used by the motor to drive the wheels. In this condition, the petrol engine remains off, thus improving the overall fuel efficiency of the vehicle and giving a quieter drive experience.

Then comes the self-charging feature of this hybrid electric vehicle, which is the most talked about feature of the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder. When the vehicle is driven at a constant speed cruising, the power produced by the engine is used to drive the wheels and the first motor-generator, which generates electricity used to charge the high voltage battery. This functionality prevents the need of charging the hybrid vehicle from an external power source.

Then there’s the motor assist function, in which the power from the engine is used to drive the wheels of the vehicle during acceleration. In addition to this, the power from the high voltage battery is used to drive the electric motor which assists the engine to get additional power. This gives a quick acceleration and high power output in a hybrid electric vehicle.

Lastly, the self-charging hybrid electric vehicle also features regenerative braking. While braking the second motor-generator acts as a generator which converts the power produced from the wheels into electricity and charges the high voltage battery. This function increases the fuel efficiency and life span of the brake pads.

The video concludes with the advantage of the high voltage battery, which states that it features an automatic power cut-off if there is any electrical trouble. It prevents the possibility of any electrical shock in the vehicle.
