Toyota Hyryder Urban Cruise mid-size SUV to be launched on 16th August 2022
Toyota Kirloskar Motors Limited (TKML) will launch the Hyryder Urban Cruiser compact SUV in India on the 16th of August, 2022. Bookings for the Hyryder have already commenced at all Toyota dealerships across India. The Hyryder will be produced at Toyota’s Bidadi factory, off Bengaluru, alongside the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara. The Grand Vitara will be launched only in September though, and the Hyryder Urban Cruiser will arrive a few weeks ahead of its Maruti-badged sibling.
Except for styling, both SUVs are nearly identical, and even share the feature-set. As for pricing, it remains to be seen if Toyota price the Hyryder lower than the Maruti Grand Vitara, or choose to price it slightly higher. Badge-engineered cars sold with the Toyota badge such as the Glanza premium hatchback and the Urban Cruiser (not to be confused with the Hyryder Urban Cruiser) sub-4 meter SUV have generally been slightly pricier than equivalent Maruti Suzuki model.
The Toyota Hyryder is the first mass-market strong hybrid on offer from the Japanese automaker. The SUV will be powered by a 1.5 liter TNGA Atkinson’s cycle four cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor. Combined output stands at 114 Bhp while individual outputs of the petrol engine and electric motor are 91 Bhp-122 Nm and 78 Bhp-141 Nm.
A CVT automatic gearbox will transfer torque to the front wheels of the SUV. The Hyryder Strong Hybrid will also have an all-electric mode in which the SUV will be able to do about 25 kilometers. A major selling point of the Hyryder Strong Hybrid will be its excellent fuel efficiency of over 27 Kmpl. Now, that’s diesel-like fuel efficiency in a petrol car.
The Toyota Hyryder Urban Cruiser will also get a more affordable mild hybrid petrol engine option in the form of the 1.5 liter K15C unit making 102 Bhp-135 Nm. This engine is borrowed from Maruti Suzuki, and runs twin injectors in every cylinder and also gets dual variable valve timing. The mild hybrid petrol engine uses an electric motor for assist during acceleration. It is offered with 5 speed manual and 6 speed torque converter automatic gearboxes.
The Hyryder will get a slew of segment leading features such as an all wheel drive system on the mild hybrid manual trims, a panoramic sunroof that’s the largest in class and an all-electric mode in the strong hybrid. As for safety, 6 airbags, ABS, EBD, traction control, hill hold, ESP, and a 360 degree parking camera are key highlights on the SUV.
We expect the Hyryder to be priced very competitively, with the base trim starting close to Rs. 10 lakh rupees. The all wheel drive variants, and the strong hybrid variants are likely to be priced a lot higher though, with on-road prices touching about Rs. 20 lakh.
