Updated MG Hector to get biggest infotainment screen in India

MG is all set to launch the second facelift of its popular SUV offering, the Hector. While a few camouflaged units of the facelifted Hector have been seen in the recent past, MG has finally confirmed its arrival by releasing a teaser image on its social media handles. The teaser image shows the new portrait-style 14-inch touchscreen infotainment system sitting in what looks like a revised centre console. MG has captioned it as the new infotainment system of the 2022 Hector.

The new 14-inch touchscreen unit looks sharper than the current version’s 10.4-inch unit and happens to be the largest measuring touchscreen unit among all the cars sold in India. Compared to the current version’s unit integrated into the dashboard, this new 14-inch screen has a floating design, like the infotainment system of the Astor. The new screen also lacks physical buttons as seen in the current unit, and gets touch-sensitive controls for various functions.

Like before, the screen will continue to be a host of various functions and in-car connectivity features, including the controls of air conditioning. It also seems to operate on the latest-gen software and is compatible with new features. We hope that MG removes the minor glitches related to the current version’s unit’s intuitiveness with this new screen.

While it is not clearly visible, the new touchscreen unit is placed on a revised centre console, which indicates that the facelifted MG Hector is expected to get a revised design for the dashboard. Even the transmission lever placed ahead of the screen looks new. There is also a glimpse of a revised fully-digital instrument console, with the fonts and graphics looking similar to those of the Astor’s console.

Apart from these new features and changes, the facelifted MG Hector will get subtle tweaks to the exterior, which include revised designs for the headlamps, tail lamps and bumpers. However, the side profile is expected to be the same in appearance, with minor tweaks to the alloy wheel design. Other features which are expected to be added in the new Hector are AI-assisted talking robots and Level 2 advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) from the Astor. The ADAS package will bring features like lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, blind spot detection and forward collision warning.

While the MG Hector in this new facelifted form will get visual tweaks to the exterior and interior, the engine options under the hood are expected to be carried forward from the current version. These powertrain options include 1.5-litre 143 PS turbocharged petrol engine with a 6-speed manual and CVT gearbox options and a 2.0-litre 170 PS diesel engine with a 6-speed manual gearbox as standard.
